Fun with Bugs #91 - On MySQL Bug Reports I am Subscribed to, Part XXV

Not sure if it's still interesting to anybody else, but MySQL users keep finding and reporting new problems that may be caused by genuine bugs in the code. I keep checking these reports and subscribing to those I consider interesting. Let me start blogging in the New Year of 2020 with a review of some replication, InnoDB and (many!) optimizer bugs reported in September and October, 2019.

As usual, I start from the oldest and care to mention bug reporters by names and add links to their other bug reports, if any. So, here is the new list:
  • Bug #96827 - "mysqlbinlog needs options to abort if invalid events are found on in-use binlogs". I had never checked myself, but I see no reasons not to trust Yoshinori Matsunobu in this case, based on code fragments shared. All current MySQL versions, from 5.6.x to 8.0.x, are affected. From what I see here, MariaDB is also affected.
  • Bug #96853 - "Inconsistent super_read_only status when changing the variable is blocked". Nice bug report by Przemyslaw Malkowski from Percona. For some reason I do not see clear statement if MySQL 8 is affected.
  • Bug #96874 - "The write_notifier_mutex in log_sys is useless". This bug was reported by Chen Zongzhi on MySQL 8.0.17 (see also hist another similar Bug #97358 - "The log.flush_notifier_mutex in log_sys is useless"), but "Version" filed is empty even though the bug is "Verified". This is NOT acceptable.
  • Bug #96946 - "Outer reference in join condition isn't allowed". This bug (that affects all MySQL versions) was reported by Laurents Meyer. See also older Bug #35242 (still "Verified" and affects MariaDB 10.3.x as well).
  • Bug #96950 - "CONCAT() can generate corrupted output". I wish we'd see the exact test case, but at least based on code review this bug (reported by Jay Edgar) was verified for MySQL 5.6 and 5.7. I see the same code in MariaDB, unfortunately.
  • Bug #97001 - "Dangerous optimization reconsidering_access_paths_for_index_ordering". The problems is with queries like this:
    SELECT ... WHERE [secondary key conditions] ORDER BY `id` ASC LIMIT n
    and bug reporter, Jeremy Cole, listed a lot of potentially related older bug reports. he had also suggested a patch. I'd be happy to see the fix in MySQL soon.
  • Bug #97113 - "BIT column serialized incorrectly in CASE expression". This bug report was created by Bradley Grainger. It is stated there that MySQL 5.7 (not only 8.0) is affected, but "Version:" field of a verified bug does NOT list 5.7.x. Absolutely wrong way of bugs processing. MariaDB also seems to be inconsistent, even though the result for one of the queries is different:

  • Bug #97150 - "rwlock: refine lock->recursive with C11 atomics". Patch for MySQL 8.0.x was contributed by Cai Yibo. See also his another contribution, Bug #97228 - "rwlock: refine lock->lock_word with C11 atomics".
  • Bug #97299 - "Improve the explain informations for Hash Joins". Simple EXPLAIN (unlike the one with format=tree) does not give a hint that new MySQL 8.0.18+ features, hash join, was used. Simple and useful feature request from Tibor Korocz.
  • Bug #97345 - "IO Thread not detecting failed master with relay_log_space_limit." Nice bug report from Jean-François Gagné, but no documented attempt to check if MySQL 5.6.x and 8.0.x are also affected.
  • Bug #97347 - "In some cases queries with ST_CONTAINS do not return any results". Simple and easy to check bug report from Christian Koinig. Note that based on quick test MariaDB is NOT affected:

  • Bug #97372 - "Constructor Query_event must check enough space". Contribution to 5.7 and 8.0 by Pengbo Shi. Waiting for the OCI signed by the contributor...
  • Bug #97418 - "MySQL chooses different execution plan in 5.7". Interesting bug report from Vinodh Krish. I am again not sure if versions affected match the results of tests presented here.
  • Bug #97421 - "Replace into affected row count not match with events in binlog". Not sure if MySQL 8 was checked, but MariaDB 10.3.7 also uses single Update_rows event in the binary log. Thanks to Ke Lu for noticing and reporting this!
Also, on a separate note, this claim of MySQL 8.0 performance regression from Mark CallaghanBug #86215, is still being analyzed it seems. No further comments for 2.5 years already!

Autumn of 2019 was fruitful. A lot of interesting MySQL bug reports also, not just grapes on my balcony...
To summarize:
  1. For some reason I often do not see explicit documented attempts by Oracle MySQL engineers from the bugs verification team to check bug on different MySQL versions. Sometimes obviously affected version (like MySQL 8.0.x) is not listed in the field. So "Version" field becomes useless This is absolutely wrong. Maybe I should submit yet another talk to some conference on how to process bugs properly?
  2. Some regression bugs are still not marked with "regression" tag when verified.
  3. MySQL optimizer still requires a lot of work to become decent.
  4. I see a lot of new interesting new bug reports both from well known old community members and users I had never noticed before by name. This is great and proves that MySQL is still alive and use all kinds of contributions from Community.

Fun with Bugs #76 - On MySQL Bug Reports I am Subscribed to, Part XIII

Holidays season is almost over here, so it's time to get back to my main topic of MySQL bugs. Proper MySQL bug reporting will be a topic of my FOSDEM 2019 talk in less than 4 weeks (and few slides with recent examples of bugs are not yet ready), so I have to concentrate on bugs.

Last time in this series I reviewed some interesting bug reports filed in November, 2018. Time to move on and proceed with bugs reported in December, 2018, as I've subscribed to 27 or so of them. As usual, I'll review them briefly starting from the oldest and try to check if MariaDB 10.3 is also affected when the bug report is about common features:
  • Bug #93440 - "Noop UPDATE query is logged to binlog after read_only flag is set". Nice corner case found by Artem Danilov. super_read_only, even if set to ON successfully, may not prevent from committing and advancing GTID value.
  • Bug #93450 - "mysqldump does not wrap SET NAMES into mysql-extension comment". This is a regression bug in MySQL 8.0 that may break compatibility with 3rd party tools not aware of MySQL extensions. This bug was reported by Mattias Jonsson.
  • Bug #93451 - "The table comment is cut down on selecting with ORDER BY". Nice regression in MySQL 8. As one can easily check, MariaDB 10.3.x and older MySQL versions are not affected.
  • Bug #93491 - "Optimizer does not correctly consider attached conditions in planning". Clear and useful bug report from Morgan Tocker.
  • Bug #93544 - "SHOW BINLOG EVENTS FROM <bad offset> is not diagnosed". Yet another regression bug in MySQL 8 found by Laurynas Biveinis from Percona. MariaDB 10.3 does not accept bad offsets:

  • Bug #93572 - "parallel workers+slave_preserve_commit_order+flushtables with read lock deadlock". I subscribed to it as it's just yet another example of improper handling of useful bug reports, as already discussed in my post "Problems with Oracle's Way of MySQL Bugs Database Maintenance". I think Ashe Sun's point is clear and suggestions like "don't do it" have nothing to do with proper bugs processing.
  • Bug #93587 - "Error when creating a table with long partition names". Nice regression bug in MySQL 8 comparing to 5.7 was found by Sergei Glushchenko from Percona.

    MariaDB 10.3.7 on Windows also fails with error message that is not clear:

  • Bug #93600 - "Setting out of range fractional part produces incorrect timestamps". After some arguing this bug reported by Evgeny Firsov was "Verified". In MariaDB 10.3 truncation happens:

  • Bug #93603 - "Memory access error with alter table character change." This bug was reported by Ramesh Sivaraman from Percona QA. I've subscribed mostly to find out how bug reports with new severity level (S6) are going to be processed and fixed. See also his Bug #93701 - "Assertion `maybe_null' failed |Item_func_concat::val_str(String*)".

    I've subscribed to S7 Bug #93617 - "Conditional jump or depends on uninitialized value(s) in Field_num::Field_num" from Laurynas Biveinis for similar reason.
  • Bug #93649 - "STOP SLAVE SQL_THREAD deadlocks if done while holding LOCK INSTANCE FOR BACKUP". New MySQL 8 feature, LOCK INSTANCE FOR BACKUP statement, is an attempt to introduce backup locks to MySQL. Sergei Glushchenko found that it may cause deadlocks. I am surprised that the bug is still "Open", since December 18, 2018.
  • Bug #93683 - "Got error 155 when reading table './test/t1'". I am not sure if this message in the error log noted by Roel Van de Paar from Percona is a bug or a problem. MariaDB 10.3.7 produces the same error message. Let's find out, so far this report is "Verified".
  • Bug #93684 - "mysql innodb dump restore slows down after upgrade mysql 5.7 to 8.0". Florian Kopp reported this potential notable performance regression of MySQL 8.0.13 vs 5.7, but it is still not verified. I am not sure how this report may end up, but it's not the first report about performance regressions in MySQL 8 :)

One can hardly find any bugs in this winter forest. But they are hiding and will affect everyone there one day, in spring...
To summarize:
  1. Some regression bugs are still not marked with "regression" tag.
  2. Some MySQL bug reports are still handled wrongly, with a trend of wasting bug reporter time on irrelevant clarifications and claims the problem is not clear, when there is a good enough explanation of the test case.
  3. Percona engineers still contribute a lot of MySQL 8 QA, by reporting numerous bugs. No wonder with their first Percona Server for MySQL 8 GA release happened in December...
I still have a dozen or so December 2018 bug reports (mostly "Open" at the moment) to review one day, so stay tuned!

On MySQL XA Transactions

One of the features I missed in my blog post on problematic MySQL features back in July is XA transactions. Probably I was too much in a hurry, as this feature is known to be somewhat buggy, limited and not widely used outside of Java applications. My first related feature request, Bug #40445 - "Provide C functions library implementing X/OPEN XA interface for Bea Tuxedo", was created almost 10 years ago, based on the issue from one of MySQL/Sun customers of that time. I remember some internal debates on how much time and efforts the implementation may require, but the decision was not made anyway, and one still can not directly integrate MySQL with Tuxedo transaction manager (that the idea of XA transactions originally came from). It's even more funny to see that feature request still just "Verified" when taking into account the fact that BEA Tuxedo software is Oracle's software since... 2008.

XA Transactions support is a useful MySQL feature, but I wonder if one day it may just become abandoned as that West Pier in Brighton, or overwhelmed with many small bugs in a same way as this stairs to the beach in Hove...

But maybe XA transactions are not widely used and nobody cares much about them?

Let me try to do a quick review of related active bug reports and feature requests before making any conclusions:
  • Bug #91702 - "Feature Request: JOIN support for XA START command". This feature request was added less than 3 months ago and is still "Open". It means there are users interested in this feature, but Oracle engineers do not care much even to verify related requests, even less - to give them some priority. 
    See also Bug #78498 - "XA issue or limitation with 5.6.19 engine", reported 3 years ago, that is essentially about the same limitation. As bug reporter explained:
    "... it prevents us to use MySQL with Weblogic on 2 phase commit scenarii..."
  • Yet another example of a request ignored for a long time is Bug #90659 - "implicit commit and unlocking with xa start", that is about the inconsistency of current implementation. Even less (as we already know) they care about XA support outside of Java as one can conclude from the fact that Connector/Net related request, Bug #70587 - "Dot Net Distributed transaction not supported in MySql Server 5.6", had not got any attention since July, 2015...
  • Bug #91646 - "xa command still operation when super_read_only is true". This bug was reported in July by Zhenghu Wen. It seems nobody cares much about XA transactions integration when new features are added to MySQL server.
  • Bug #89860 - "XA may lost prepared transaction and cause different between master and slave". This bug reported by Michael Yang (See also Bug #88534) sounds really serious and was previously reported by Andrei Elkin (who works for MariaDB now) as Bug #76233 - "XA prepare is logged ahead of engine prepare". See also Bug #87560 - "XA PREPARE log order error in replication and binlog recovery" by Wei Zhao, who also contributed a patch. See also Bug #83983 - "innodb fail to recover the prepared xa transaction" (the bug reported by Dennis Gao is still "Open", while it's clearly related to or is a duplicate of "Verified" bugs mentioned above).
    So many related/duplicate problem reports, but no fix so far!
  • Bug #88748 - "InnoDB: Failing assertion: trx->conc_state == 1". This assertion failure was reported by Roel Van de Paar back in December, 2017. See also his Bug #84754 - "oid String::chop(): Assertion `strlen(m_ptr) == m_length' failed."
    I noted that Oracle recently invented new "low" severity levels, and this bug is S6 (Debug Builds). I do not really agree that assertions in debug builds are of so low severity - they are in the code for a reason, to prevent crashes in non-debug builds and all kinds of inconsistencies.
  • Bug #87526 - "The output of 'XA recover convert xid' is not useful". This bug reported by Sveta Smirnova caused a lot of troubles to poor users with prepared transactions hanging around for weeks after crash, as it prevented any easy way to get rid of them (and related locks) in some cases. The bug is still "Verified" in MySQL and "On hold" in Percona Server, while MariaDB fixed it in 10.3, see MDEV-14593.
  • Bug #87130 - "XA COMMIT not taken as transaction boundary". Yet another bug report with a patch from Wei Zhao.
  • Bug #75205 - "Master should write a LOST_EVENTS entry on xa commit after recovery." DaniĂ«l van Eeden reported this at early 5.7 pre-GA stage, and manual explains now that:
    "In MySQL 5.7.7 and later, there is a change in behavior and an XA transaction is written to the binary log in two parts. When XA PREPARE is issued, the first part of the transaction up to XA PREPARE is written using an initial GTID. A XA_prepare_log_event is used to identify such transactions in the binary log. When XA COMMIT or XA ROLLBACK is issued, a second part of the transaction containing only the XA COMMIT or XA ROLLBACK statement is written using a second GTID. Note that the initial part of the transaction, identified by XA_prepare_log_event, is not necessarily followed by its XA COMMIT or XA ROLLBACK, which can cause interleaved binary logging of any two XA transactions. The two parts of the XA transaction can even appear in different binary log files. This means that an XA transaction in PREPARED state is now persistent until an explicit XA COMMIT or XA ROLLBACK statement is issued, ensuring that XA transactions are compatible with replication."
    but the bug report is still "Verified".
    By the way, the need to deal with such prepared transactions recovered from the binary log caused problems like those listed above (with XA RECOVER CONVERT and order of preparing in the binary log vs engines that support XA...
  • Bug #71351 - "select hit query cache after xa commit, no result return". This bug probably affects only MySQL 5.5, so no wonder it's ignored now. Nobody tried to fix it while MySQL 5.5 was still supported, though.
There are some more bugs originally filed in other categories, but still related to XA:
  • Bug #72036 - "XA isSameRM() shouldn't take database into account". This Connecotr/J bug was reported in 2014 by Jess Balint.
  • Bug #78050 - "Crash on when XA functions activated by a storage engine". It happens when binary log not enabled. This bug was reported by Zhenye Xie, who also contributed a patch later. Still this crashing bug remains "Verified".
  • Bug #87385 - "Partial external XA transactions are not rolled back correctly". Yet another bug report with a patch from Wei Zhao. See also his Bug #87389 - "Replication position not persisted correctly for XA transactions".
  • Bug #91633 - "Replication failure (errno 1399) on update in XA tx after deadlock". This bug reported by Lukas Sydorowski got recent comment from other community member yesterday. So, the feature is used these days, still.
Now time for conclusions:
  1. Take extra care while using XA transactions in replication environments or with point in time recovery - you may easily end up with slaves out of sync with master and data lost.
  2. Feature requests related to XA transactions are mostly ignored, sometimes for a decade... 
  3. Patches contributed do not seem to speed up XA bug fixing.
  4. I'd say that Oracle does not care much about XA Transactions since MySQL 5.7 GA release in 2015.
  5. MySQL Community still use XA transactions with MySQL (and they will be used even more as corporate users migrate from Oracle RDBMS), find bugs and even try to fix them. But probably will have to use forks rather than MySQL itself if current attitude towards XA bugs processing and fixing remains.

Fun with Bugs #42 - Bugs Fixed in MySQL 5.7.12

MySQL 5.7.12 was released more than 2 weeks ago. New features introduced there in a form of "rapid plugins" are widely discussed, but I am more interested in bugs reported by MySQL Community users that are fixed there. Unfortunately I do not see MySQL Community Release Notes by Morgan (like this) for quite a some time, so I have to continue describing key bug fixes and name people who reported and verified bugs in my "Fun with Bugs" series.

As usual, let's start with InnoDB bugs fixed:
  • Bug #80070 - "allocated_size and file_size differ if create general tablespace outside datadir". It was reported by my former colleague from Percona Shahriyar Rzayev and verified by Bogdan Kecman. Nice to see more people from Oracle involved in processing community bug reports!
  • Bug #79185 - "Innodb freeze running REPLACE statements". This bug (that affected many users, also on versions 5.5.x and 5.6.x, and was a kind of a regression) was reported by Will Bryant and verified (probably) and fixed by Shaohua Wang. The fix is also included into versions 5.5.49 and 5.6.30.
  • Bug #73816 - ''MySQL instance stalling “doing SYNC index”". It was reported by Denis Jedig and a lot of additional evidence was provided by my former colleague Aurimas Mikalauskas. This bug was fixed (and probably verified) by Shaohua Wang.
  • Bug #79200 - "InnoDB: "data directory" option of create table fails with pwrite() OS error 22", is a widely noted regression (I've seen customer issue with a potentially related MariaDB problem this week). This bug was reported by Frank Ullrich and verified by Bogdan Kecman. It is also fixed in MySQL 5.6.30.
  • Bug #79725 - "Check algorithm=innodb on crc32 checksum mismatch before crc32(big endian)". This bug was created to track the patch contributed by Daniel Black at GitHub. It was verified by Umesh.
Next, let's review replication bugs fixed in 5.7.12:
  • Bug #79504 - "STOP SLAVE IO THREAD prints wrong LOST CONNECTION message in error log file". It was reported by Venkatesh Duggirala.
  • Bug #78722 - "Relay log info currently_executing_gtid is not properly initialized or protected". This bug was reported by Pedro Gomes. It contains a nice simple test case and fix suggested.
  • Bug #78445 is private. So, I can only quote the release notes:
    "RESET SLAVE ALL could delete a channel even when master_pos_wait and wait_until_sql_thread_after_gtid were still waiting for binlog to be applied. This could cause a MySQL server exit when the functions tried to access the channel that was deleted. Now, a channel reference counter was added that is increased if the channel should not be deleted when the functions are running. RESET SLAVE ALL will wait for no reference, and then it will delete the channel."
    I am not sure this crash is a "security" bug of any kind, but what do I know...
  • Bug #78352 - "Slow startup of 5.7.x slave with relay_log_recovery = ON and many relay logs". I reported it based on regression comparing to 5.6.x reported by a customer of Percona, and verified by Umesh. Nice to see it fixed, as it was really annoying for almost anyone who upgraded production replication setup to 5.7.
  • Bug #78133 - "Slave_worker::write_info() incorrect DBUG_ENTER (contribution)". This bug was created to track the patch contributed by Stewart Smith at GitHub. It was verified by Umesh.
  • Bug #77740 - "silent failure to start if mysql.gtids_executed gets HA_ERR_LOCK_WAIT_TIMEOUT ". It was reported and verified by Shane Bester.
  • Bug #77237 - "Multi-threaded slave log spamming on failure". This bug was reported by Davi Arnaut and verified by Umesh. Fix is also included in MySQL 5.6.30.
  • Bug #78963 - "super_read_only aborts STOP SLAVE if relay_log_info_repository=TABLE, dbg crash". It was reported by my former colleague in Percona Laurynas Biveinis and verified by Umesh. Check also related Bug #79328 - "super_read_only broken as a server option".
  • Bug #77684 - "DROP TABLE IF EXISTS may brake replication if slave has replication filters". This bug was reported by my former colleague in Percona Fernando Laudares Camargos for MySQL 5.6.x and verified by Umesh. MySQL 5.6.30 also got this fixed.
We all remember that Performance Schema is perfect and the next greatest thing after sliced bread, but sometimes bugs are noted even there. Check Bug #79934 - "i_perfschema.table_leak random result failure" reported and verified by Magnus BlĂ„udd. Another example is Bug #79784 - "update setup_instruments do not affect the global mutex/rwlock/cond" reported by Zhang Yingqiang and verified by Umesh. The later, IMHO, is related to or a super set of my good old report, Bug #68097 - "Manual does not explain that some P_S instruments must be enabled at startup" that remains open as a feature request (after some changes in the manual) for more than 3 years already. I truly hope 5.7.12 fixed this for a general case - it's truly important to be able to enable instruments dynamically if we expect Performance Schema to be used as a main tool for troubleshooting.

I'd also want to highlight a couple of fixes related to optimizer:
  • Bug #77209 - "Update may use index merge without any reason (increasing chances for deadlock)". It was reported and verified by my former colleagues from Oracle, Andrii Nikitin. MySQL 5.6.30 also includes the fix.
  • Bug #72858 - "EXPLAIN .. SELECT .. FOR UPDATE takes locks". This bug was reported by my former colleague in Percona (and, I hope, my colleague again soon) Justin Swanhart, who has a birthday today. Happy Birthday to you, Justin! The bug was verified by Umesh and is also fixed in MySQL 5.6.30. Justin had reported another bug fixed in 5.7.12, Bug #69375 - "LOAD DATA INFILE claims to be holding 'System Lock' in processlist".
Several more bugs reported by community were also fixed, but they were in the areas (or for platforms) I am not particularly interested in.

To summarize, MySQL 5.7.12 contains important bug fixes in replication and InnoDB and it makes sense to consider upgrade even if you do not care about any "rapid plugins", X protocol, encryption of data at rest, MySQL Keyring and other "cool" new shiny features.
