Fun with Bugs #70 - On MySQL Bug Reports I am Subscribed to, Part VIII

More than 2 months passed since my previous review of active MySQL bug reports I am subscribed to, so it's time to describe what I was interested in this summer.

Let's start with few bug reports that really surprised me:
  • Bug #91893 - "LOAD DATA INFILE throws error with NOT NULL column defined via SET". The bug was reported yesterday and seem to be about a regression in MySQL 8.0.12 vs older versions. At least I have no problem to use such a way to generate columns for LOAD DATA with MariaDB 10.3.7.
  • Bug #91847 - "Assertion `thread_ids.empty()' failed.". As usual, Roel Van de Paar finds funny corner cases and assertion failures of all kinds. This time in MySQL 8.0.12.
  • Bug #91822 - "incorrect datatype in RBR event when column is NULL and not explicit in query". Ernie Souhrada found out that the missing column is given the datatype of the column immediately preceding it, at least according to mysqlbinlog output.
  • Bug #91803 - "mysqladmin shutdown does not wait for MySQL to shut down anymore". My life will never be the same as before after this. How can we trust anything when even shutdown command is no longer works as expected? I hope this bug is not confirmed after all, it's still "Open".
  • Bug #91769 - "mysql_upgrade return code is '0' even after errors". Good luck to script writers! The bug is still "Open".
  • Bug #91647 - "wrong result while alter an event". Events may just disappear when you alter them. Take care!
  • Bug #91610 - "5.7 or later returns an error on strict mode when del/update with error func". Here Meiji Kimura noted a case when the behavior of strict sql_mode differs in MySQL 5.6 vs never versions.
  • Bug #91585 - "“dead” code inside the stored proc or function can significantly slow it down". This was proved by Alexander Rubin from Percona.
  • Bug #91577 - "INFORMATION_SCHEMA.INNODB_FOREIGN does not return a correct TYPE". This is a really weird bug in MySQL 8.
  • Bug #91377 - "Can't Initialize MySQl if internal_tmp_disk_storage_engine is set to MYISAM". It seems Oracle tries really hard to get rid of MyISAM by all means in MySQL 8 :)
  • Bug #91203 - "For partitions table, deal with NULL with is mismatch with reference guide". All version affected. maybe manual is wrong, but then we see weird results in information_schema as well. So, let's agree for now that it's a "Verified" bug in partitioning...
As usual, I am interested in InnoDB-related bugs:
  • Bug #91861 - "The buf_LRU_free_page function may leak some memory in a particular scenario". This is a very interesting bug report about the memory leak that happens when tables are compressed. It shows how to use memory instrumentation in performance_schema to pinpoint the leak. This bug report is still "Open".
  • Bug #91630 - "stack-use-after-scope in innobase_convert_identifier() detected by ASan". Yura Sorokin from Percona had not only reported this problem, but also contributed a patch.
  • Bug #91120 - "MySQL8.0.11: ibdata1 file size can't be more than 4G". Why nobody tries to do anything about this "Verified" bug reported 2 months ago?
  • Bug #91048 - "ut_basename_noext now dead code". This was reported by Laurynas Biveinis.
Replication problems are also important to know about:
  • Bug #91744 - "START SLAVE UNTIL going further than it should." This scary bug in cyclic replication setup was reported by  Jean-François Gagné 2 weeks ago and is still "Open" at the moment.
  • Bug #91633 - "Replication failure (errno 1399) on update in XA tx after deadlock". On top of all other problems with XA transactions we have in MySQL, it seems that replication may break upon executing a row update immediately after a forced transaction rollback due to a deadlock being detected while in an XA transaction.
Some optimizer bugs also caught my attention:
  • Bug #91486 - "Wrong column type , view , binary". We have a "Verified" regression bug here without a "regression" tag or exact versions checked. Well done, Sinisa Milivojevic!
  • Bug #91386 - "Index for group-by is not used with primary key for SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT a)". Yet another case where a well known bug reporter, Monty Solomon, had  to apply enormous efforts to get it "Verified" as a feature request.
  • Bug #91139 - "use index dives less often". A "Verified" feature request from Mark Callaghan.
The last but not the least, documentation bugs. We have one today (assuming I do not care that much about group replication):
  • Bug #91074 - "INSTANT add column undocumented". It was reported by my former colleague in Percona, Jaime Crespo. The bug is still "Verified" as of now, but since MySQL 8.0.12 release I think it's no longer valid. I see a lot of related details here, for example. But nobody cares to close this bug properly and provide the links to manual that were previously missing.

Fun with Bugs #64 - On MySQL Bug Reports I am Subscribed to, Part IV

I've subscribed to more than 15 new MySQL bug reports since the previous post in this series, so it's time for a new one. I am trying to follow important, funny or hard to process bug reports every day. Here is the list of the most interesting recent ones starting from the latest (with several still not processed properly):
  • Bug #90211 - "Various warnings and errors when compiling MySQL 8 with Clang".  Roel Van de Paar and Percona in general continue their QA efforts in a hope to make MySQL 8 better. Current opinion of Oracle engineers on this bug is the following:
    "First of all, these issues are in protobuf, not MySQL per se. There are some warnings with Clang 6, but since they're in third-party code, we have simply disabled them when compiling protobuf (will be part of 8.0.11). Optionally, -DUSE_SYSTEM_LIBS=1 will use system protobuf and thus not compile the files in question.
    As for the crash, we don't support prerelease compilers (more generally, we support platforms, not compilers). Given the stack trace, it is highly likely that the issue either is in the prerelease Clang, or in protobuf.
    "
    Let's see how it may end up. Roel rarely gives up easily...
  • Bug #90209 - "Performance regression with > 15K tables in MySQL 8.0 (with general tablespaces)". Nice regression bug report from Alexander Rubin. It is still "Open".
  • Bug #90190 - "Sig=6 assertion in MYSQL_BIN_LOG::new_file_impl | binlog.cc:6862". Yet another bug report from Percona employee, Ramesh Sivaraman.
  • Bug #89994 - "INDEX DIRECTORY shown as valid option for InnoDB table creation". Everybody knows how much I like fine MySQL manual. Even more I like when missing or wrong details are found there, like in this case reported by by colleague from MariaDB, Claudio Nanni.
  • Bug #89963  - "Slowdown in creating new SSL connection". Maybe it's comparing apples to oranges, as stated in one of comments, but I am surprised that this (performance regression) bug report by Rene' Cannao' is still "Open". It requires more attention, IMHO. Speed of connections matters a lot for MySQL.
  • Bug #89904 - "Can't change innodb_max_dirty_pages_pct to 0 to flush all pages". Good intentions to set better default value (applied a bit later than needed) led to the problem. As Simon Mudd put it:
    "innodb_max_dirty_pages_pct_lwm setting has existed since 5.6. This issue only comes up as by changing the default value to 10 those of us who have ignored it until now never noticed it existed. That is a shame as setting this value to a value other than 0 (e.g. 10 which is the new default) should be better and trigger some background flushing of dirty pages avoiding us hitting innodb_max_dirty_pages_pct which would trigger much more aggressive behaviour which is not really desirable."
  • Bug #89876 - "mysqladmin flush-hosts is not safe in GTID mode". Yet another bug report from Simon Mudd. See also Bug #88720 that highlights even more problems with various FLUSH statements and GTIDs.
  • Bug #89870 - "Group by optimization not used with partitioned tables". For some reason this report from Arnaud Adant is still "Open". As my colleague Richard Stracke stated:
    "The only solution would be, that the optimizer is able to check, if the condition in the where clause include the whole table (or partition) and in this case use group by optimization."
  • Bug #89860 - "XA may lost prepared transaction and cause different between master and slave." As this (and other, like Bug #88534) bug report from Michael Yang shows, there is still a long way to go until it would be safe to use XA transactions with MySQL.
  • Bug #89834 - "Replication will not connect on IPv6 - does not function in an IPv6 only environ". This bug report from Tim St. Pierre is still "Open".
  • Bug #89822 - "InnoDB retries open on EINTR error only if innodb_use_native_aio is enabled". We have patch contributed by Laurynas Biveinis from Percona.
  • Bug #89758 - "Conversion from ENUM to VARCHAR fails because mysql adds prefix index". This funny bug was found and reported by Monty Solomon.
  • Bug #89741 - "Events log Note level messages even for log_warnings=0". Nikolai Ikhalainen found that this problem happens only in versions 5.5.x and 5.6.x, so chances to see it fixed are low. But I still want to know if this ever happens.
  • Bug #89696 - "Cyclic dependencies are not resolved properly with cascade removal". Make sure to check nice discussion that my dear friend Sinisa Milivojevic had with a bug reporter, Andrei Anishchenko, before marking the bug as "Verified". This regression was most likely caused by a change in MySQL 5.7.21:
    "InnoDB: An iterative approach to processing foreign cascade operations resulted in excessive memory use. (Bug #26191879, Bug #86573)"
  • Bug #89625 - "please package the debug symbols *.pdb files!". Shane Bester always cared about having a way to debug on Windows. Recently I also started to care about this...

Fun with Bugs #50 - On Bugs Tagged as "missing manual"

Back in January 2014, some time after many nice people kindly asked me to shut up stop writing about MySQL bugs on Facebook several times per day, I decided to start reading the fine MySQL Manual more carefully than before and report not only typos there, but also any topic or detail not properly explained. Usually these reports, tagged as "missing manual", were the result of careful study of the documentation based on real user question or customer issue. So, most of these reports came from real life, and missing information badly affected poor MySQL users.

Today, for this issue #50 in my series of posts about MySQL bugs, I decided to list and summarize 20 currently active (of 66 total) bugs (mostly documentation requests) tagged as "missing manual", starting from the oldest:
  • Bug #71293 - "Manual page for P_S.FILE_INSTANCES table does not explain EVENT_NAME values". Performance Schema was one of my favorite topics back then, as I was working on my second talk and presentation about it. No single comment since the bug was verified by Umesh Shastry.
  • Bug #71294 - "Manual page for P_S.FILE_INSTANCES table does not explain '~' in FILE_NAME". The bug was re-classified as server one, but still no further activity since then. Go figure what does this output may mean:

  • Bug #71521 - "Manual does not list all valid values for innodb_flush_method". Actually, it seems the manual now lists them all, but the bug was not properly closed.
  • Bug #71732 - "Garbage value in output when MASTER_LOG_FILE='' is set". The bug was re-classified as Replication one, but I doubt that current state is documented in details.
  • Bug #71808 - "Manual does not explain what TICK timer is and why it's different on Windows". Still waiting for something... Had not checked if anything was documented, but TICK timer still exists in 5.7.17.
  • Bug #72368 - "Empty/zero statistics for imported tablespace until explicit ANALYZE TABLE". This is the InnoDB bug, and it seems there was some work performed on it internally, but the only information in the manual about the need to run ANALYZE is in user comment dated October, 2014. Had I already informed you that I hate persistent InnoDB statistics, the way it is implemented, for many reasons (including this bug)? Now you know. Statistics must be stored, engine-independent and re-estimated only upon explcit DBA request, if you ask me...
  • Bug #73299 - "DEFAULT value for PRIMARY KEY column depends on the way to declare it PRIMARY". It's probably a server bug, but maybe, until it is fixed, manual should explain current server's behavior in some note?
  • Bug #73305 - "Manual does not explain all cases when SHOW VIEW privilege is needed". SHOW VIEW privilege may be needed to run EXPLAIN against query referring the view. See Bug #73306 also ("Manual does not explain what privileges are needed for EXPLAIN explainable_stmt"). I still remember user's confusion that led to these report...
  • Bug #73413 - "Manual does not explain MTS implementation in details". Try to find out in the manual what threads are created for multi-threaded slave, what are their typical statuses, does replication event format (ROW vs STATEMENT) matter for MTS or not...
  • Bug #76563 - "Manual does not explain when exactly AUTO-INC lock is set for "bulk inserts"". There are reasons to think that when target table is different from the source one, AUTO-INC lock is set on the target table after reading the first row from the source one. Check my old blog post for more details. This is the first still "Verified" bug in this list that is explicitly devoted to InnoDB locking. You'll see several more below.
  • Bug #77390 - "Manual does not explain a "deadlock" case of online ALTER". Trust me, online ALTER sets metadata lock at early stage, but it is not exclusive. Check some of my posts about MDL and this documentation request: Bug #84004 - "Manual misses details on MDL locks set and released for online ALTER TABLE".
  • Bug #79665 - "Manual does not explain locks set by INSERT ... ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE properly". It wouldbe great to see  the manual describing all the locks set by INSERT ... ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE carefully and properly, covering both the duplicate on PRIMARY key case and duplicate on secondary UNIQUE key case.
  • Bug #80067 - "Index on BIT column is not used when column name only is used in WHERE clause". It's a pure optimizer bug/problem, but while it is not resolved it would be nice for the manual to describe current behavior.
  • Bug #82127 - "Deadlock with 3 concurrent DELETEs by UNIQUE key". Manual does not explain locks set on secondary indexes properly, for too many cases, including this one. InnoDB does work as designed, and you can find some explanations (by my colleague Jan Lindström) of this design and reasons behind it in MDEV-10962. Check Bug #83640 - "Locks set by DELETE statement on already deleted record" also for the idea of how one may (mis-)interpret what really happens in similar cases. This is because InnoDB's implementation of locking is not properly explained, including implicit locks (see some details and links here), locking of secondary indexes etc. This missing information leads to all kinds of misunderstanding and speculations about "lock upgrading" etc, for decades already.
  • Bug #82212 - "mysqlbinlog can produce events larger than max_allowed_packet for mysql". This is a server problem, but, as I put it, please, describe "safe" setting of max_allowed_packet in case of row-based replication in the manual clearly, as well as any workarounds for the case when max_allowed_packet was 1G on the server that produced binary long with huge row based event that one needs to restore now.
  • Bug #83024 - "Internals manual does not explain COM_SLEEP in details". One may argue that this is truly irrelevant for most users, but it's hard to explain slow log content sometimes:

  • Bug #85557 - "Manual does not explain locks set by UPDATE with subquery referring other table". I had to report it yesterday, as some users considers current behavior (proper, but not documented at all) a bug and complained. My dear friend Sinisa Milivojevic verified it promptly.
I understand that it's hard to keep the quality of MySQL manual, and some of the documentation requests mentioned above stay active for years just because it's really a lot of work to document things properly. Documentation team is, probably, concentrated on desribing new and shiny features of MySQL 8.0 (one day I'll start to read its manual) or InnoDB clusters/Group replication.

Fun with Bugs #39 - Known Bugs in MySQL 5.7.9 GA

These days everybody is excited with recent announcement of MySQL 5.7.9 GA release. If you are not aware of this event yet (I've noted it from numerous posts even during my short vacation), wait for the Oracle Open World 2015 to begin tomorrow to announce it even wider and louder!

I already have 5.7.9 built from source, up and running, so it's time to check what else we can expect from this new GA release besides new great features (this is a topic for a separate post or two) and usual excitement. Yes, I mean known, verified bugs in MySQL 5.7.9.

Let me start with a quick summary and then present the details. So, even though MySQL Community tried hard to check 5.7.x at early stages and report bugs to Oracle, MySQL 5.7.9 GA has a number of known installation and upgrade problems, code is not always clean, not all community suggested patches are included. As usual with new releases, there are some performance issues (one should expect single thread to run slower than on older versions in many cases), including those on replication slaves. Some new features are not completely documented, some implementation details are missing here and there, and transparent page compression, for example, is hardly can be widely used at the moment. All these are expected for users who had seen previous GA releases of MySQL. What's a bit worse, I suspect there are known crashing bugs (sequence of SQL statements that, when executed by a user with enough privileges, crashes non-debug binaries) in MySQL 5.7.9. Also, MySQL 5.7.9 inherits some regression bugs from MySQL 5.6.x.

Quick search for active bugs in version 5.7 reported over last 6 months gives me a list of 157 bugs that probably affect MySQL 5.7.9. I've excluded those that are not yet verified formally, those affecting older versions (5.6.x and 5.5.x), most of documentation and test problems and ended up with the following list that I want to present to those who plan to upgrade to 5.7 GA really soon:
  • Bug #78936 - "Installing MySQL on Linux Using Debian Packages missing dependency". This is mostly a documentation request. Please, check comments there for the correct order of .deb packages installation, if you plan to use dpkg.
  • Bug #78591 - "mysqld --initialize fails on empty data directory". Some more installation problems on Ubuntu...
  • Bug #78895 - "Lack information about generated columns in mysql_fetch_fields function". Now, this is typical, unfortunately, for new MySQL features. They are rarely completely implemented in first few GA releases. Oracle still has to rely on MySQL Community to find these small missing implementation details (or design problems) here and there.
  • Bug #78848 - "Docs still claim Performance Schema does not allocate memory after startup". While formally it's just a documentation bug, it is about a notable change in behavior. In 5.7 additional memory may be allocated after startup to support performance_schema. This had never been the case before. My report that is based on real customer case, Bug #78808, "Manual is wrong when explaining the default UMASK value", is of a similar kind - some clear changes in behavior are NOT documented properly before making GA announcement. MySQL 5.7 follows the same bad tradition of 5.0, 5.1, 5.5, and 5.6 GA releases here...
  • Bug #78778 - "mysqlclient does not return correct mysql_insert_id via database handle". It seems to be a regression bug (even though it is not tagged so) and as a result your DBD::mysql Perl module may not work with 5.7 the way you expect.
  • Bug #78774 - "old-password subcommand is still in mysqladmin --help in 5.7". Minor problem, but I wonder why it could not be fixed in the code before GA release. It seems the build/QA/release process still takes a lot of time in Oracle, so even those bugs noted by Community in RC releases were reported "too late" to influence the GA release. This is unfortunate.
  • Bug #78758 - "Inserting (invalid) utf8 data into 5.6.25 master breaks 5.7 slave". There is a workaround documented, but this bug report shows that upgrade from 5.6 may not be seamless and simple (are you surprised?) and that upgrade was NOT really tested really well by the internal QA process. I am not surprised, it had always been the case.
  • Bug #78672 - "assert fails in fil_io during linkbench with transparent innodb compression". Facebook engineers are trying hard, but transparent page compression mostly does NOT work well (if only on NVMFS, see Bug #78277 also). Just remember that for now, before you became too excited with the feature.
  • Bug #78495 - "Table 'mysql.gtid_executed' cannot be opened." Don't be scared with this warning, it's "Ok"...
  • Bug #78374 - "CREATE USER IF NOT EXISTS" reports an error". New feature that just does not work as documented. Well done.
  • Bug #78352 - "Slow startup of 5.7.x slave with relay_log_recovery = ON and many relay logs". This my report is also based on a real life customer case. Take care when upgrading, really.
  • Bug #78254 - "After running mysql_upgrade proxies_priv user columns are not updated to 32". mysql_upgrade is not able to fix all incompatibilities for further seamless use of MySQL 5.7.
  • Bug #78251 - "handle_fatal_signal (sig=11) in mach_double_read". No further comments for now.
  • Bug #78236 - "InnoDB: Failing assertion: holder != requestor". Again, no comments.
  • Bug #78219 - "compression can be defined on a compressed table if innodb_strict_mode is OFF"
  • Bug #78068 - "replication_* tables miss information about binary log position and other". I should not comment on performance_schema any more probably.
  • Bug #77740 - "silent failure to start if mysql.gtids_executed gets HA_ERR_LOCK_WAIT_TIMEOUT". You can end up with failures and error log does not help to find out why...
  • This bug was actually reported back in February, so it was not in the list of 157 recent reports, and there is nothing unexpected here, but still. Note that single thread performance of MySQL 5.7.x GA may be worse than for older versions, see Bug #75981, "MySQL 5.7.5 30% slower than 5.6.23 for 1 thread write", for example.
Some potential performance issues, mistakes in the code and debug-only assertions (that may show huge internal corruptions) are never noted until somebody starts to test a lot or read the code carefully:
  • Bug #78894 - ''buf_pool_resize can lock less in checking whether AHI is on or off".
  • Bug #78637 - "Incorrect for loop condition in mysql_crawler.cc"
  • Bug #78732 - "InnoDB: Failing assertion: *mbmaxlen < 5 in file ha_innodb.cc line 1803".
  • Bug #78728 - "InnoDB: Failing assertion: 0 in file ha_innopart.cc line 3526" 
  • ... check the list yourself, there are many more assertion failures and code review problems reported  ...
  • Bug #77094 - "Reduce log_sys->mutex contention by allowing concurrent mtr commit and log write". This is just one of many patches contributed by Zhai Weixiang that remain just "Verified"
I expect many more reports of this kind from Roel, Laurynas and my other colleagues now, when Percona is actively working on its own Percona Server 5.7 GA release.

The last but not the least, if you are upgrading to 5.7 GA from 5.5.x or older versions, check known regressions in MySQL 5.6. Many of them are affecting 5.7.9 as well, unfortunately.

Fun with Bugs #26 - MySQL bugs Oracle had not fixed for me (yet)

In the previous post in this series I've listed 15 MySQL bug reports, documentation and feature requests I've made in 2013 that got fixes or any other kind of solution. Now it's time to check what happened to the rest and try to think why.

First of all, no MySQL bug reporter is perfect (if only Domas), so some bug reports may be false alarms ("Not a bug"), to hard to fix at any foreseeable future ("To be fixed later") or asking for something that Oracle does not plan to provide at all ("Won't fix" or "Unsupported"). Some of my bug reports this year felt into these categories:
  • Bug #71205 - "Queries to P_S seems to pass extra stages related to query cache". This is "Not a bug", as it seems access to query cache happens even before SELECT is parsed enough to find out it accesses table(s) in PERFORMANCE_SCHEMA. So, if you want to avoid extra overhead in general case make sure you start all your queries to PERFORMANCE_SCHEMA with SELECT SQL_NO_CACHE ... I'd prefer to see this explicitly mentioned in the manual, but maybe it's only me.   
  • Bug #71170 - "Please, make MySQL RPMs relocatable". This one was set to "Unsupported", so Oracle does not plan to provide relocatable packages and users who want to test/use multiple versions of MySQL server should either rely on chroot environments, .tar.gz packages and sandboxes or wait for other MySQL providers to make their RPMs relocatable (if ever). Fair enough.
  • Bug #71041 - "Please, document every instrument in P_S.setup_instruments in details". Here I see "To be fixed later", so it seems documentation team has more important things to do than to document all the details of PERFORMANCE_SCHEMA instrumentation. This is sad as it's hard to use instrumentation now without knowing all ins and outs of the code. I am also not satisfied with official reasons to have this undocumented listed in the manual.
  • Bug #69399 - "Inconsistency in crash report". It's "Won't fix" and for a really good reason explained by Shane. Signal handler must use approved safe functions or risk causing a crash itself. time() is safe but returns UTC. So, you should expect that for crashes, assertion failures and outputs caused by other signals you get timestamps in UTC, no matter what your timezone is. So, this was my fault.
Some bug reports are still not processed ("Open" or "Analyzing"). That's expected for complex reports, those without clearly repeatable test case (I try to NOT send reports like this) or related to not clearly documented features of MySQL server. But I have one feature request that is probably just missed. It's the Bug #70196 - "DISCARD/IMPORT tablespace is not supported for partitioned InnoDB tables". There is no way to IMPORT just one partition, or, for that matter, to backup or restore from backup only one partition, even when it is stored in the individual .ibd. file and you use advanced tools like MySQL Enterprise Backup for backups. This is unfortunate that nobody explicitly cares about this.

The rest of my reports sent this year were accepted as valid and has "Verified" status. One can hardly expect for 20+ valid MySQL server or documentation bugs he reported to be fixed over a year, so this situation is not a problem. But I still would like to remind about a couple of reports that are verified long time ago and still do not get any visible attention or fixes:
  • Bug #68097 - "Manual does not explain that some P_S instruments must be enabled at startup". it was reported on January 16, 2013 and it seems already clear what instruments (mutexes actually) must be enabled upon startup (and then can be disabled and enabled back dynamically at runtime), by design. Slide 35 of my presentation for Percona Live London 2013 quotes the explanation made by famous Oracle's performance expert, Dimitri Kravtchuk, in his blog. But the documentation request is still just "Verified".
  • Bug #69574 - "Slave crashes when applying row-based binlog entries in cascading replication...". It affects MySQL 5.6, was verified 6 months ago, sounds serious enough and still had not got any single comment after verification.
For other bug reports I agree to wait patiently... Just note that while I like to play with PERFORMANCE_SCHEMA or find some minor problems in the manual just for fun, most of my bug reports for InnoDB, Optimizer, Partitioning and Replication categories are based on real life issues noted by Percona customers. They were not really funny to hit in production and caused notable problems.
