Fun with Bugs #88 - On MySQL Bug Reports I am Subscribed to, Part XXII

It's Saturday night. I have a week of vacation ahead that I am going to spend at home, working on things I usually do not have time for. I already did something useful (created a couple of test cases for MariaDB bugs here and there, among other things), so why not to get some fun and continue my previous review of recent interesting MySQL bug report...

So, here is the list of 15 more MySQL community bug reports that I've subscribed to back in May and June 2019:
  • Bug #95491 - "The unused wake up in simulator AIO of function reserve_slot". I am impressed by the fact that these days many people just study InnoDB code, find problematic parts, improve them, test and prove the improvement, and submit patches to Oracle. Chen Zongzhi, who reported this bug, is one of such great people.
  • Bug #95496 - "Replication of memory tables". As pointed out by Iwo P, MySQL manual describes what happens to MEMORY tables replicated from master to slave in details, including the case of master restart. But one detail is missing - when slave with MEMORY tables restarts, even with super_read_only set, it also generates even to delete data from the table into its own binary log, with GTID, and this leads to problems in case of failover.
  • Bug #95507 - "innodb_stats_method is not honored when innodb_stats_persistent=ON". This bug was reported by my colleague Sergei Petrunia. See also related MDEV-19574  (still "Open").
  • Bug #95547 - "MySQL restarts automatically after ABORT_SERVER due to disk full". I am not sure this is a replication bug, more a problem of too primitive mysqld_safe or systemd startup scripts that do not check free space on disk or reason why mysqld process committed suicide. Anyway, this report by Przemyslaw Malkowski from Percona was accepted as a replication bug.
  • Bug #95582 - "DDL using bulk load is very slow under long flush_list". As found and proved by Fungo Wang, due to optimized away redo log writing for bulk load, to make sure such DDL is crash safe, dirtied pages must be flushed to disk synchronously. Currently this is done inefficiently, as shown in this bug report. See also a year old (and still "Open") Bug #92099 - "provide an option to record redo log for bulk loading" from the same reporter, where he asks for a way to get redo logging back (but still benefit from other "online" ALTER features). MariaDB has that option after the fix of MDEV-16809.
  • Bug #95612 - "replication breakage due to Can not lock user management caches for processing". Simon Mudd noted that in some cases simple DROP USER IF EXISTS ... breaks parallel replication in MySQL 8.0.16. Good to know that START SLAVE allows to continue :)
  • Bug #95698 - "JSON columns are returned with binary charset". This bug was reported by Daniel Book. Note that according to the original issue, DBD::MariaDB (I had no idea this exists!) works properly with MariaDB 10.3 or 10.4. I had not checked.
  • Bug #95734 - "Failing SET statement in a stored procedure changes variables". This really weird and unexpected bug was reported by Przemysław Skibiński.
  • Bug #95863 - "MTS ordered commit may cause deadlock ". Great finding by Lalit Choudhary from Percona!
  • Bug #95895 - "Shutdown takes long time when table uses AUTOINC and FOREIGN KEY constraints". It was reported by Satya Bodapati from Percona, who later contributed as patch. See also his related Bug #95898 - "InnoDB releases memory of table only on shutdown if table has FK constraint". I truly hope to see these fixed in next minor releases of MySQL. Note that originally bug (PS-5639) was reported by Sveta Smirnova.
  • Bug #95928 - "InnoDB crashes on compressed and encrypted table when changing FS block size". Make sure to check and write original filesystem block size somewhere... This bug was reported by Sergei Glushchenko from Percona.
  • Bug #95929 - "Duplicate entry for key 'PRIMARY' when querying information_schema.TABLES". This nice feature of new data dictionary of MySQL 8.0.16 under concurrent load was found by Manuel Rigger.
  • Bug #95934 - "innodb_flush_log_at_trx_commit = 0 get performance regression on 8 core machine". If I had access to 8 cores box, I'd try to check this sysbench-based complete test case immediately. I should do this on my quadcore box at least, next week. But here we see some 12 days just wasted and then bug report from Chen Zongzh ended up "Analyzing", till today, with no further feedback.
  • Bug #95954 - "CAST of negative function return value to UNSIGNED malfunctions with BIGINT". Yet another weird bug found by Manuel Rigger. There are patches (separate for 5.6, 5.7 and 8.0) contributed by Oleksandr Peresypkin.
Montjuïc is a place to enjoy nice view of Barcelona and forget about MySQL bugs. So, I could miss some interesting ones at the end of May, 2019...
To summarize:
  1. Percona engineers still contribute a lot of useful and interesting MySQL bug reports, often - with patches.
  2. I am impressed by quality of MySQL bug reports in 2019. Often we see detailed analysis, proper complete test cases and patches.
  3. There is a recent fork of DBD::mysql for MariaDB (and MySQL), DBD::MariaDB!
  4. I badly need some new hardware for running benchmarks and tests from recent bug reports...
  5. I should spend more time in May in Barcelona :)

On my Favorite FOSDEM 2019 MySQL, MariaDB and Friends Devroom Talks

This year I had not only spoken about MySQL bugs reporting at FOSDEM, but spent almost the entire day listening at MySQL, MariaDB and Friends Devroom. I missed only one talk, on ProxySQL, (to get some water, drink a bottle of famous Belgian beer and chat with my former colleague in MySQL support team, Geert, whom I had not seen for a decade). So, for the first time out of my 4 FOSDEM visits I've got a first hand impression about the entire set of talks in the devroom that I want to share today, while I still remember my feelings.

Most of the talks have both slides and videos already uploaded on site, so you can check them and make your own conclusions, but my top 5 favorite talks (that have both videos and slides already available to community) were the following:

  • "Un-split brain (aka Move Back in Time) MySQL", by Shlomi Noach. You can find slides at SlideShare.

    This was a replacement talk that was really interesting and had proper style for FOSDEM. It was mostly a nice background story of creation of the gh-mysql-rewind tool, a shell script that uses MariaDB's mysqlbinlog --flashback option and MySQL GTIDs and allows to "rewind" row-based binary log to roll back transactions to some previous point in time. The tool should become available to community soon, maybe as a part of orchestrator. I was impressed how one can successfully use 49 slides for 20 minutes talk. That's far beyond my current presentation skills...
  • "Test complex database systems in a laptop with dbdeployer", by Giuseppe Maxia. You can find slides at SlideShare.

    I've already built and used dbdeployer, as described in my blog post, so I was really interested in the talk. Giuseppe was able not only to show 45 slides over 20 minutes and explain all the reasons behind re-implementing MySQL-Sandbox in Go, but also run a live demo where dozens of sandbox instances were created and used. Very impressive!
  • "MySQL and the CAP theorem: relevance & misconceptions", second great talk and show by Shlomi Noach. You can find slides at SlideShare.

    The "CAP theorem" says is a concept that a distributed database system (like any kind of MySQL replication setup) can only have 2 of the 3 features: (atomic) Consistency, (high) Availability and Partition Tolerance. This can be proved mathematically, but Shlomi had not only defined terms and conditions to present the formal proof, but also explained that they are far from real production objectives of any engineer or DBA (like 99.95% of Availability). He had shown typical MySQL setups (from simple async master-slave replication to Galera, group replication and even Vitess) and proved that formally they all are neither consistent nor available from that formal CAP theorem point of view, while, as we all know, they are practically useful and work (and with some efforts, proxies on top etc can be made both highly available and highly consistent for practical purposes). So, CAP theorem is neither representing real production systems, nor meeting their real requirements. We've also got some kind of explanation of why async master-master or circular replication are still popular... All that in 48 slides, with links, and presented in 20 minutes! Greatest short MySQL-related talk I've ever attended.
  • "TiDB: Distributed, horizontally scalable, MySQL compatible", by Morgan Tocker. You can find slides at SlideShare.

    It was probably the first time when I listened to Morgan, even though we worked together for a long time. I liked his way of explaining the architecture of this yet another database system speaking MySQL protocol and reasons to create it. If you are interested in performance of this system, check this blog post.
  • "MySQL 8.0 Document Store: How to Mix NoSQL & SQL in MySQL 8.0", by Frédéric Descamps. You can find slides (70!) at SlideShare.

    LeFred managed to get me somewhat interested in MySQL Shell and new JSON functions in MySQL, way more than ever before. It's even more surprising that hist talk was the last one and we already spent 8+ hours listening before he started. Simple step by step explanation of how one may get the best of both SQL, ACID and NoSQL (JSON, "MongoDB") worlds, if needed, in a single database management syste, was impressive. Also this talk probably caused the longest discussion and the largest number of questions from those remaining attendees.

    He was also one of two "hosts" and "managers" of the devroom, so I am really thankful him for hist efforts year after year to make MySQL devroom at FOSDEM great!
There were more good talks, but I had to pick up few that already have slides shared and those of a kind that I personally prefer to listen to at FOSDEM. This year I also missed few people whom I like to see and talk to at FOSDEM, namely Mark Callaghan and Jean-François Gagné.

The only photo I made with my Nokia dumb phone this year in Brussels, on my way to FOSDEM on February 2. We've got snow and rain that morning, nice for anyone who had to walk 5 kilometers to the ULB campus.
Overall, based on my experience this year, it still makes a lot of sense to visit FOSDEM for anyone interested in MySQL. You can hardly find so many good, different MySQL-related talks per just one single day on any other conference.

Fun With Bugs #62 - On Bugs Related to JSON Support in MySQL

Comparing to "online ALTER" or FULLTEXT indexes in InnoDB, I am not that much exposed to using JSON in MySQL. OK, there is EXPLAIN ... FORMAT=JSON statement that is quite useful, optimizer trace in MySQL is also in JSON format, but otherwise I rarely have to even read this kind of data since my lame attempt to pass one introductory MongoDB training couse back in 2015 (when I mostly enjoyed mongo shell). Even less I care about storing JSON in MySQL.

But it seems community users do use it, and there is a book for them... So, out of pure curiosity last week I decided to check known bugs reported by MySQL Community users that are related to this feature (it has a separate category "MySQL Server: JSON" in public bugs database. This is a (short enough) list of my findings:
  • Bug #89543 - "stack-overflow on gis.geojson_functions / json.json_functions_innodb". This is a recent bug report from Laurynas Biveinis. Based on last comment, it may have something to do with specific GCC compiler version and exact build option (WITH_UBSAN=ON) used. But for me it's yet another indication that community (Percona's in this case) extra QA still matters for MySQL quality. 
  • Bug #88033 - "Generated INT column with value from JSON document". As Geert Vanderkelen says: "would be great if JSON null is NULL".
  • Bug #87440 - "use union index,the value of key_len different with used_key_parts’ value." This is actually a bug in optimizer (or EXPLAIN ... FORMAT=JSON), but as it is still "Open" and nobody cared to check it, it still stays in the wrong category.
  • Bug #85755 - "JSON containing null value is extracted as a string "null"". Similar to Geert's case above, Dave Pullin seems to need an easy way to get real NULL in SQL when the value is null in JSON. It is stated in comments that now everything works as designed, and it works exactly the same in MariaDB 10.2.13. Some users are not happy though and the bug remains still "Verified".
  • Bug #84082 - "JSON_OBJECT("k", dateTime) adds milliseconds to time". In MariaDB 10.2.13 the result is different:

  • Bug #83954 - "JSON handeling of DECIMAL values, JSON from JSON string". Take care when you cast values to JSON type.
  • Bug #81677 - "Allows to force JSON columns encoding into pure UTF-8". This report is still "Open" and probably everything works as designed.
  • Bug #79813 - "Boolean values are returned inconsistently with JSON_OBJECT". Take care while working with boolean properties.
  • Bug #79053 - "Second argument "one" to JSON_CONTAINS_PATH is a misnomer". Nice request from Roland Bouman to use "some" instead of "one" in this case. Probably too late to implement it...
There also several related feature requests, of them the following are still "Open":
  • Bug #84167 - "Managing deeply nested JSON documents with JSON_SET, JSON_MERGE". As a comment says, "It would by nice if MySQL came up with a solution for this in a more constructive way".
  • Bug #82311 - "Retrieve the last value of an array (JSON_POP)". I am not 100% sure what the user wants here, but even I can get last array element in MongoDB using $slice, for example:

  • Bug #80545 - "JSON field should be allow INDEX by specifying table_flag". It seems some 3rd party storage engine developers want to have a way to crate and use some nice indexes of their engines to get efficient index-based search in JSON documents.
  • Bug #80349 - "MySQL 5.7 JSON: improve documentation and possible improvements". Simon Mudd asked for more documentation on the way feature is designed (for those interested in the details of JSON data type implementation in modern MySQL versions there is a detailed enough public worklog, WL#8132) and asked some more questions. Morgan Tocker answered at least some of them, but this report still stays "Open" since that times...
It would be great for remaining few "Open" reports from community users to be properly processed, and a couple of real bugs identified fixed. There are also features to work on, and in the meantime workarounds and best practices should be shared. Maybe there are enough of them for the entire book.

That's almost all I have to say about JSON in MySQL at the moment.
